Mudrooms are all the rage right now, and for good reason. These clutter-corralling storage spaces are workhorses when it comes to creating a beautiful home that actually functions. The mudroom in our Sunbury Manor project has gone viral on Instagram, so we figured it was time to spill the beans on how we designed this stunning yet-budget friendly space.

Filled with moments of quiet luxury and modern functionality, this home is proof that you don't have to sacrifice beauty for function. While our interior design work always honors the beauty of each home’s unique architecture, this particular project incorporates elements of transitional design seamlessly blending modern and vintage pieces. The result is a curated, cozy and welcoming atmosphere—a hallmark of our studio's aesthetic.
1
MIX HIGH & LOW
Designing a budget-friendly space that packs a punch is all about mixing high-and-low materials. You have to be willing to splurge in some areas, and save in others. In the Sunbury Manor mudroom, this meant pairing high-end cabinetry with budget-friendly tile and countertops.
The room is encircled by fully custom, Amish-made cabinets crafted from solid quarter-sawn white oak. We had them stained in a beautiful medium-toned shade that really compliments the grain of the oak. Concealed storage is key when it comes to a mudroom (we are not big fans of open storage spaces, it complete defeats the purpose). This mudroom features four lockers that have storage drawers underneath a long, functional bench seat. These are perfect for storing kids outwear and sports gear, as well as household cleaning supplies.
Because the cabinets were such an investment, it was our goal to save money on the rest of the building materials in the space. The floor tile was a great find and a steal at less than $3/sq ft. It is large format porcelain from Floor & Decor. We also saved money by opting for no backsplash (it wouldn't' really have a function in a mudroom, anyway) and using a quartz remnant for the countertop our stone supplier had lying around. By going more budget-friendly on the floors and countertops and skipping a backsplash all together, we were able to balance the budget and spread it out over the whole of the space.
2
USE A NEUTRAL-BUT-TEXTURAL COLOR PALETTE
One of the reasons this mudroom is such a standout is how the tones of the space come together. The whole home was designed with a mostly neutral color palette that is able to evolve with different styling pieces or a change in seasons. In this space, the medium-toned stain on the cabinets reads as a neutral and pairs nicely with the stone-look porcelain flooring. It's a color palette that very's informed by nature and is therefore super easy on the eyes. We boosted the design with a custom-made textured jute rug with a bold black contrast pattern. The hardware is matte black but the plumbing and lighting is brass which made things very dynamic.
When designing a neutral space, it doesn't have to be boring. You just have to know how to mix your materials in a way that feels refined, cohesive and elegant.
3
USE A LEAST ONE STANDOUT DESIGN ELEMENT
The sink in this mudroom has been the topic of much discussion on Instagram. The large format porcelain tile is a bit more modern in nature as are the drawer pulls, cabinet knobs and flush mount. Because of that, we wanted to balance the space out with a super timeless feature. Enter this gorgeous country basin sink. Although our clients did not want a farmhouse style in their home, the functionality and timelessness of this sink could not be denied. Paired with more modern finishes, it becomes perfectly juxtaposed in this mudroom as a stand-out piece that really defined the space, and did not propel the home into farmhouse territory but instead reads as super high-end and dynamic.
